This is an extra meeting (usual Speaker evening format) in celebration of WG Grace’s life.
Friday 23rd October is the 100th anniversary of WG Grace’s death at the age of 67.
We are delighted that Richard Tomlinson who is giving a tribute to WG at the GCCC Memorial Dinner on Friday 23rd October at the County Ground in Bristol has agreed to speak to us about WG’s life. Richard recently appeared at the Cheltenham Literature Festival with David Gower, David Lloyd and Michael Atherton. His much acclaimed biography, ‘Amazing Grace: The Man Who was WG’, published on 03 September 2015, contains references to many previously unseen archive documents – it gives a fresh, new insight into WG, the record-breaking pioneer of cricket, son of Gloucestershire and most recognisable figure in Victorian Britain. Some reviews of his book are given below.
‘Amazing Grace is a fluently written study, imbued with humour and sympathy, that yields many insights as well as much pleasure’ – David Kynaston, Daily Telegraph
‘Grace emerges from this book as Ian Botham, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Gascoigne and David Beckham rolled into one: a symbol not just of Victorian England, but of sport itself’ – Dominic Sandbrook, Sunday Times.
‘Industrious, witty, insightful, this biography ought to be the standard work on W.G. for years to come’ – Sam Kitchener, Independent
